Our magnificent tall ship sailing vessel Gas Light is a

modern day replica of an 1874 scow schooner of the same name that actually plied the waters of San Francisco Bay. Our boat, however, is built to a very high standard with a steel hull and deck as well as a current US Coast Guard certification for 50 passengers.

Even though Gas Light is built for the charter trade, she has retained her traditional rigging and steering systems. This translates to you as a guest having the ability to help out our crew and even take a turn at her wheel!

As we navigate out from the dock, the captain will give the command to the crew to “haul away”! This can be your opportunity to step back in time and take a turn raising one of the 3 sails used to propel Gas Light through the water. You get a hands on experience!

There are 2 lines used for each sail to raise and lower them. It takes at least 2 people on each to raise the sails and get underway.

Our professional crew loves to put our guests in the limelight for this important task. Help “sweat” up the huge sails and feel the power once they are trimmed for the wind.

As we sail along dancing over the Bay waters, stroll back to the helm and chat with our captain. If you like, he will put you at the wheel when the time is right.....just ask.

Steering a Tall Ship such as Gas Light is not for the faint of heart, but the rewards of only a few minutes at the helm are great! Even if you are not a sailor, you can get an idea of what the salty skippers who commanded these vessels were feeling as they navigated San Francisco Bay carrying huge loads of freight in all weather in all seasons.

Our captain will show you how to trim the sails and steer a straight course. With only a short time at the wheel will give you a great appreciation for the power and allure of these classic sailing ships. This is a real hand on sailing experience aboard a tall ship!
