San Francisco Bay Sailing Destination: McCovey Cove

AT&T Park.jpg

Bay Lights Charters offers trips aboard Gas Light to enjoy all that McCovey Cove has to offer. McCovey Cove is a perfect for a group charter or a cruising skipper aboard their own boat, there are dozens of choices in and around San Francisco Bay. Few, however have as convenient and easy access to a decent anchor location adjacent to a first-class marina as South Beach Harbor.

Also known as Pier 40, this modern Marina is within a 5 minute walk to AT&T Park, or a 25 minute walk to the Ferry building.

Overnight slips are available by calling in advance: 415 495-4911.

The marina has two entrances. One from the north and from the south. The north entrance is used to access the pump out dock which is restricted to 15 minute docking only. This same side tie dock is also used by many different passenger vessel operators to pick up and drop off passengers daily. Do not remain tied up on this dock for more than 15 minutes if you are using the pump out facilities.

The south entrance opens up directly on the small cove known as McCovey Cove. This "V" shaped notch in the shoreline is actually a fun place to anchor anytime, particularly during SF Giants home games! If you wish to actually watch the game, it can be done by either anchoring or motoring along the southern bank of the cove and viewing the Jumbo-tron as the game is underway. Be aware that there are danger buoys along the stadium side of the cove to warn boaters to keep clear of the Ferry landing during games. McCovey Cove is also a nice place to anchor for the day to simply get out of the central Bay wind, chill and chop. Overnight anchoring is discouraged since the cove is small and not suitable for more than 5 or 6 boats at a time.
